Alex Skiles

Alex Skiles is an Assistant Teaching Professor and Assistant Undergraduate Director in the Department of Philosophy at Rutgers University's School of Arts and Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, specializing in metaphysics and philosophy of science.

Research interests include non-causal explanation in metaphysics/science, logic of identity/essence, and existence metaphysics. His work engages with classical Hindu/Buddhist philosophical traditions. Before Rutgers, he held research positions at University of Geneva, NYU, MIT, and others.

Recent publications analyze grounding theory (2020-2022), essence and modality (2022), and emergence (2016). Teaching includes Introduction to Logic (01:730:201) and Plato/Aristotle (01:730:302). Office: 106 Somerset St - 546.
