Professor Alex Schekochihin is a leading academic in theoretical plasma physics and astrophysics at the University of Oxford. He holds the position of Professor of Theoretical Physics and is a Fellow of Merton College. His research focuses on plasma turbulence, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), and their applications in astrophysical systems like galaxy clusters, solar wind, and fusion energy devices such as tokamaks.
As a faculty member, he teaches advanced courses in kinetic theory, fluid dynamics, and statistical physics at Oxford. He coordinates graduate admissions for the Merton College Physics program and oversees the Oxford Master's Course in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics. His research group actively collaborates with institutions like the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (UKAEA) and the JET tokamak facility.
Professor Schekochihin's work bridges fundamental plasma physics with applied fusion science, addressing challenges such as plasma confinement and energy transport in both astrophysical and laboratory settings. His group investigates topics ranging from cosmic ray confinement in galaxy clusters to turbulence-driven magnetic field generation (dynamo effects) in laser-driven plasmas.
He advises a diverse cohort of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, many engaged in experimental collaborations at facilities like the GSI Helmholtz Centre and the National Ignition Facility (NIF). His research outputs span theoretical modeling, numerical simulations, and data analysis from fusion and space plasma missions.
