Alex Sandy Pentland

Alex Sandy Pentland is a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology directing the Human Dynamics Laboratory and MIT Media Lab Entrepreneurship Program. He co-leads World Economic Forum initiatives on Big Data and Personal Data while serving on advisory boards for Nissan, Motorola Mobility, and Telefonica. His academic home is within MIT's Program in Media Arts and Sciences under the Information Technology academic area.

Pentland pioneers research in computational social science, organizational engineering, and wearable computing—including foundational work on Google Glass—with additional expertise in image understanding and modern biometrics. His research examines how social networks and data-driven systems influence human behavior, organizational dynamics, and urban environments, frequently bridging technical innovation with societal impact through projects serving underserved populations in Africa and South Asia.

His recent publications demonstrate consistent focus on applying computational methods to critical societal challenges—spanning pandemic modeling, algorithmic fairness, urban mobility equity, and remote work optimization—with strong emphasis on ethical data usage and real-world implementation. This work appears in premier journals including Science, PNAS, and Harvard Business Review.

Current executive education programs focus on Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work, with courses scheduled through 2026.

His Human Dynamics Laboratory and entrepreneurship program drive innovation in social physics and data ethics, recently highlighted for developing tools like the Data Provenance Initiative to address AI training dataset risks. Ongoing projects examine political polarization, AI communication tools, and sustainable urban development through collaborations with global organizations.
