Dr. Alex Russell is an Associate Professor and Principal Research Fellow at CQUniversity within the School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, focusing on gambling-related research in the Experimental Gambling Research Laboratory. His work examines how technology transforms gambling and its societal impacts, including vulnerable populations and stigma reduction. He holds a PhD from the University of Sydney and has taught statistics and research methods across multiple institutions, earning teaching awards for his accessible approach.
Dr. Russell’s education includes a BSc (Psychology), GradDipSci (Psychology with Merit), and a PhD from the University of Sydney, supervised by Prof. Bob Boakes. His research spans gambling advertising, wagering inducements, and sensory perception (e.g., wine odor description, synesthesia).
His research interests include gambling harm measurement, safer gambling practices, and methodological innovations like Qualtrics survey design. He has been awarded the NSW Young Tall Poppy Award, ABC’s Top 5 Scientist, and multiple teaching accolades. His work has informed policy and public health interventions, including safer gambling messages and exclusion programs.
Dr. Russell has supervised research on gambling’s environmental and financial impacts, including eco-anxiety mitigation and decision-making analysis. His articles explore topics like legacy harms, smartphone betting risks, and skill-based gambling mechanics. He collaborates with government bodies (e.g., NSW Office of Responsible Gambling) and has authored over 100 publications, emphasizing rigorous statistical analysis and real-world application.
