Alex Reid

Alex Reid is a Professor and Honorary Professorial Fellow in the School of Physics, Maths and Computing at The University of Western Australia, specializing in Computer Science and Software Engineering. His roles include advising on eResearch/middleware for AARNet Pty Ltd from 2005–2019. Previously, he served as Director of Oxford University Computing Services (1993–2000) and IT Policy Executive Officer at UWA (2000–2005).

Research focuses on IT ethics, open source software models, digital literacy, eLearning, and strategic IT management. Key projects include the Use of Open Source Software in Higher Education (2003) and ongoing work on IT's societal implications. He has published on historical computing initiatives in remote regions and cryptographic milestones.

Notable outputs include studies on open source adoption in education and the socio-technical history of computing infrastructure. His work bridges technical innovation with ethical and pedagogical challenges in IT deployment.
