Dr. Alex Ramadan is a Lecturer in Energy Materials at the University of Sheffield's School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Department of Physics and Astronomy. His research focuses on new and emerging semiconductors, particularly metal halide perovskites, to develop technologies addressing climate change through high-efficiency solar photovoltaics and energy-efficient LEDs. He leads the Ramadan Lab, investigating semiconductor surfaces/interfaces and their impact on device stability and performance. Key research areas include perovskite crystallization, interfacial passivation, and sustainable optoelectronic applications.
Notable contributions include advancements in perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells, methylammonium-free perovskites for tandem photovoltaics, and understanding degradation mechanisms in perovskite devices. He advocates for improving diversity and research culture in physics. Recent work includes studies on alumina nanoparticles in perovskite thin films, ultrasonic spray deposition techniques, and dataset-driven analysis of degradation pathways. His lab collaborates on projects such as the Lindau Nobel Meeting and the University of Sheffield’s sustainability conferences.
Academic advising includes PhD students Sophie Tucker and Rehmat, and postdoctoral researcher Grace, who presented research on perovskite solar cells. Grants and funding focus on interdisciplinary materials science and energy technologies. The lab emphasizes translating fundamental material science into scalable, commercially viable solutions for renewable energy.
