Dr. Alex Metcalfe is a Senior Lecturer in History at Lancaster University, specializing in medieval Mediterranean history with a focus on Islamicate societies, Norman Sicily, and Sardinia. He holds a PhD from Leeds University and has held visiting professorships at institutions including Jagiellonian University (Krakow) and the University of Cyprus. His research explores the intersection of religion, language, and power in premodern societies.

Research Interests: His work centers on Muslim communities in medieval Italy, particularly Norman Sicily's multicultural dynamics. Key themes include Arabic documents, medieval numismatics, and the socio-political evolution of Sardinia. He leads major projects like the £1M AHRC-funded 'Power, society and (dis)connectivity in medieval Sardinia' (2019–24).
