Alex Meshik is a Research Professor of Physics at Washington University in St. Louis, affiliated with the Department of Physics and the Laboratory for Space Sciences. He joined the institution in 1996 and was promoted to Research Professor in 2006. His research focuses on astrophysics, solar wind analysis, and nano-diamond studies, with notable contributions to NASA’s Genesis Mission, which involved capturing and analyzing solar wind noble gases. Meshik also investigates xenon isotopic anomalies, geo- and cosmo-chronology using xenon isotopes, and double beta decay processes in Ba and Te isotopes.
Education: PhD from the Vernadsky Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences.
Research highlights include pioneering work on meteoritic nano-diamonds via selective laser extraction and studies of fission xenon in Earth’s atmosphere. He is currently part of the Mars Sample Return Science Definition Team alongside Kun Wang, aiming to maximize scientific insights from Perseverance rover samples. Meshik mentors graduate students like Mary, whose work examines cometary material isotopes. His lab actively engages with planetary missions such as Juno’s Io exploration and exoplanet research collaborations within the Laboratory for Space Sciences.
Affiliations include the Laboratory for Space Sciences at Washington University, where he collaborates with peers like Tansu Daylan on expanding planetary science horizons. His work bridges fundamental astrophysical processes with cutting-edge analytical techniques, contributing to our understanding of solar system evolution and cosmic origins.
