
Alex Mazzaferro

Alex Mazzaferro is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). His research bridges early American and African American literature with the history of political thought, science, and religious studies, focusing on the interplay between epistemological shifts and hierarchies during the Scientific Revolution and colonial era.

His work interrogates how colonialism, slavery, and resistance shaped modern knowledge systems and sovereignty. He examines transatlantic and circum-Caribbean contexts, challenging Eurocentric narratives through colonial literature, religious discourse, and the Black Atlantic.
Professor Mazzaferro’s recent publications explore slave insurrection, print culture, and political innovation. His articles span topics like the role of narrative in racial hierarchies, the history of sovereignty, and critical engagements with Black Marxism.
Scientific Awards:
- American Literature Society’s 1921 Prize in American Literature (2022)
He has received grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Mellon Foundation, and the Library Company of Philadelphia, and held fellowships at the University of Chicago’s Institute on the Formation of Knowledge, the American Philosophical Society, and Rutgers University. During 2024–2025, he will be a Fletcher Jones Foundation fellow at the Huntington Library.
