Alex Martin, Ph.D., serves as Chief of the Section on Cognitive Neuropsychology at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD. He has led this research section since 1997, having joined NIMH in 1990 after faculty positions at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
His research employs functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) to investigate neural circuitry underlying perceptual, memory, and social functions. Primary research domains include:
- Semantic memory organization and object recognition mechanisms
- Neural plasticity through experience and learning
- Representation of abstract social knowledge in autism spectrum disorders
