Dr. Alex Lorson is an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen's Center for Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG), affiliated with the Semantics and Cognition Group. His research focuses on experimental pragmatics, cognitive science, and strategic communication, integrating Bayesian statistical methods and co-speech gestures analysis. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh and completed postdoctoral work at the University of Birmingham under Bodo Winter.
Education: PhD in Linguistics (University of Edinburgh, supervised by Hannah Rohde and Chris Cummins), Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University of Birmingham (Making Numbers Meaningful project).
Research Interests: Experimental pragmatics, numerical cognition, gesture's role in communication, strategic language use, and communicative strategies in multilingual contexts. Current projects explore how gestures and linguistic choices shape numerical estimates and information transmission.
Key Contributions: Over 15 peer-reviewed articles since 2019, including studies on quantifier interpretation, additive markers in discourse, and epistemic framing strategies. Active in organizing academic events, including a 2025 PhD program in sociolinguistics and experimental pragmatics.
Lab Affiliations: Semantics and Cognition Group (CLCG), collaborating with Petra Hendriks and other international researchers. Supervising ongoing projects on multimodal communication and pragmatic reasoning.
