Dr. Alex Jeffries is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Bath, and affiliated with the Milner Centre for Evolution. Their research bridges bioinformatics-driven investigations of bacterial genome evolution with science education policy and curriculum development.
Research interests include:
- Functional analysis of simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in bacterial genomes beyond phase variation
- Refining bioinformatics methods for horizontal gene transfer detection and amelioration modeling
- Systematic identification of "missing" genes in metabolic pathways using non-structural approaches
- Science education policy, particularly socioscientific issues and evolutionary concepts in curricula
Recent work includes the 2025 PLoS ONE framework for integrating socioscientific issues in elementary schools (UK/Italy/Portugal collaboration) and the 2004 discovery of catalytic activity in archaeal multienzyme complexes. Their publications span molecular biology, bioinformatics, and science education domains, with notable contributions to understanding RASSF family proteins' roles in cancer (2010) and curriculum assessment frameworks (2021).
Their work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and environmental sustainability, particularly through collaborations on science popularization and curriculum development across the UK, Italy, and Portugal.
Based at the Milner Centre for Evolution (1.12), they utilize computational approaches to explore bacterial evolution while maintaining active involvement in educational policy research. Their ORCID profile (0009-0004-6923-0979) documents 9 research outputs as of 2025.
