Alex Hoyt, PhD, RN is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. He holds a B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from Denison University, a Family Nurse Practitioner degree from MGH IHP, and a PhD in Social Policy from Brandeis University's Heller School. His expertise spans health services research, health policy, and the healthcare workforce, with a focus on advanced practice providers (APPs).
Dr. Hoyt’s research examines state-level variations in APP scope of practice, their impact on workforce dynamics and health outcomes, and organizational APP labor utilization. Recent work includes studies on APP roles in multiple sclerosis care and opioid prescribing patterns under state regulations.
He teaches health care economics, policy, and finance in the DNP program and 'Health Care Policy and Politics' in the Masters program, supervising student culminating projects. Dr. Hoyt has received awards including Outstanding Reviewer from Medical Care (2017–2019) and Nursing Outlook (2017), and the Inge Corless Research Award (2014).
His service includes peer reviewing for major journals and roles in professional organizations like the Eastern Nursing Research Society. He also explores nursing workforce challenges, including union representation and NP certification alignment.
