Alex E. Chávez is Nancy O'Neill Associate Professor of Anthropology at Notre Dame, with affiliations in Latino Studies. His research examines sound, migration, and cultural identity along the US-Mexico borderlands through ethnographic and artistic practice.
Research explores:
- Aural poetics of Mexican migrant communities
- Latinx cultural production in urban contexts
- Performance as political expression
- Sonic archives and material culture
Authored the award-winning monograph 'Sounds of Crossing' analyzing huapango arribeño music. Recent album 'Sonorous Present' blends ethnographic research with musical composition. Recipient of multiple book awards and fellowships including NEH and Ford Foundation support.
Supervises graduate research on diaspora, performance, and decolonial methodologies. Serves on the Recording Academy's Chicago Chapter Board.
