Dr. Alessio Gallina is a Lecturer in Musculoskeletal Pain and Rehabilitation at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham, where he is also affiliated with the Centre of Precision Rehabilitation for Spinal Pain. His research centers on neuromuscular and neuromechanical adaptations to musculoskeletal pain, utilizing electrophysiological and biomechanical techniques to study human movement in both clinical and experimental pain contexts.
Research Interests:
- Neuromechanical adaptation to clinical and experimental pain
- Neuromechanical predictors of musculoskeletal pain onset and maintenance
- Electrophysiological techniques and neuromuscular control
Dr. Gallina's recent publications reveal a strong focus on understanding regional muscle activation patterns in conditions like chronic low back pain, patellofemoral pain, and post-stroke recovery, often employing high-density EMG. His work bridges fundamental neuroscience with clinical rehabilitation, aiming to identify clinically relevant biomarkers for pain and impaired movement. He has contributed to systematic reviews and protocol developments, indicating methodological rigor.
Scientific Engagement:
- Editorial Board Member, Frontiers in Integrative Physiology
- Editorial Board Member, Archives of Physiotherapy
- Reviewer for numerous journals including Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, Human Movement Science, PLOS One, and Clinical Biomechanics
- Member of the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology, International Society of Biomechanics, and Societá Italiana Fisioterapia
Dr. Gallina contributes to teaching in 'Neuromuscular Adaptations to Training' and 'Athletic Training and Conditioning' and is open to supervising Master's and PhD students in his areas of expertise. His educational background includes a BSc and MSc from Italian universities and a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of British Columbia.
