Alessio Ciannarella

Alessio Ciannarella serves as a Lecturer in Artistic Literature and Museology (L-ART/04) at Sapienza University of Rome's SARAS Department since 2020 and concurrently holds a Postdoctoral researcher position at Herzog August Bibliothek. Ciannarella's research centers on Art History with specialized focus on Rome (17th-19th century), artistic literature, cultural heritage dispersion/destruction, and cartography. His current project "Promoting Rome's Image: Guides Between the 17th and 19th Centuries" analyzes how guidebook compilers constructed Rome's spatial narrative through selective descriptions and omissions. Using GIS technology, he maps historical routes and landmarks to reveal evolving perceptions from Ancien Régime travelers to modern tourists. He also investigates Giovanni Gaetano Bottari's intellectual legacy in 18th-century European art history and conservation practices.

He actively contributes to the Sapienza-funded research group "Giovanni Gaetano Bottari (1689–1775) and His Legacy: Art History, Museums, Conservation in the Eighteenth Century Europe", reconstructing Bottari's influence on museum practices and art historical scholarship across Enlightenment-era Europe.
