Alessandro De Vita was a distinguished researcher in Condensed Matter Physics and Computational Materials Science, renowned for his contributions to electronic structure theory, quantum many-body methods, and machine learning applications in materials discovery. He was a key figure in the Psi-k Network and CECAM (European Centre for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas), organizations he deeply influenced through his leadership and scientific vision. His work focused on understanding novel phenomena in van der Waals materials, topological systems, and strongly correlated electron systems, often leveraging advanced computational techniques like density functional theory (DFT), quantum Monte Carlo (QMC), and machine learning force fields.
De Vita's research spanned theoretical and experimental collaborations, addressing questions in magnetism, ultrafast dynamics, and materials design. His studies on layered antiferromagnets, kagome lattices, and ferromagnetic van der Waals systems provided foundational insights into spintronics and topological phases. He also pioneered methods for bridging quantum and classical simulations, enabling large-scale studies of material behavior under extreme conditions.
His legacy is marked by over 100 influential publications and his role in shaping international workshops and conferences on theoretical spectroscopy and computational materials science. Despite his tragic passing in 2018, his work continues to inspire advancements in understanding quantum materials and developing predictive computational tools.
