Alessandro Angelini is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Johns Hopkins University, affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on urban anthropology, social inequality, and the intersection of creativity, capitalism, and marginalized communities. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the City University of New York (2013) and conducted postdoctoral research at the London School of Economics.
His work examines urban environments such as Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, exploring how creativity and imagination manifest in constrained socio-economic contexts. His book project, Model Favela: Miniature Life in Rio de Janeiro, analyzes role-playing games and material culture as lenses into power dynamics and urban structuring. He has also studied urban surveillance technologies, including Rio’s 'Smarter Cities' initiative and Baltimore’s 'spy plane' program.
Angelini advises students on urbanization in the global South, experimental ethnography, and critical anthropological thought. His research bridges historical ethnography, political economy, and the anthropology of art and play.
