Dr. Alessandra Buccella is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University at Albany (SUNY). Her research bridges AI ethics, philosophy of mind, and cognitive science, with a focus on the societal implications of AI technologies and interdisciplinary collaboration between philosophy and neuroscience. She holds a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh (2020) and Master’s degrees from the University of Barcelona and University of Milan. Prior to UAlbany, she conducted postdoctoral research at Chapman University’s Institute for Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences.
Her work examines ethical challenges in AI decision systems, human-AI interaction, and perceptual science. She is actively engaged in public humanities initiatives, including a certificate from Georgetown’s Engaged Humanities program and NSF-funded inclusive STEM teaching training. Buccella co-leads interdisciplinary teams pursuing grants in trustworthy AI for mental health and data science education.
Her research outputs span academic journals (e.g., European Journal of Neuroscience, AI and Ethics) and public platforms like Scientific American. Current projects emphasize explainable AI, perceptual constancy theories, and the social justice dimensions of AI accessibility.
