Aleksandar Kavčić is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University's College of Engineering. He holds a doctoral degree in electrical and computer engineering from CMU and an electrical engineering degree from Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. Prior to his current role, he served as Assistant Professor and John L. Loeb Associate Professor of Natural Sciences at Harvard University, and later joined the University of Hawaii in 2007.
His research focuses on signal processing algorithms for high-density data storage systems, particularly magnetic recording technology. He co-invented a patented detector algorithm that became industry-standard hardware in over 60% of computers manufactured since the early 2000s, enabling accurate data retrieval from increasingly miniaturized drives.
In 2017, Kavčić and his wife Sofija—jointly with professors José Moura and Manuela Veloso—donated $16.5 million to CMU to establish the Kavčić–Moura Endowment Fund. This supports data science/engineering education through Presidential Fellowships, research grants, and professorships, with significant allocations to CMU's Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC).
