Alejandro Olmedo-Velarde is an Assistant Professor at Iowa State University, specializing in Host-Virus interactions within agricultural systems. Originally from Ecuador, he focuses on viruses affecting crops and agricultural pests by analyzing complex vector-borne disease dynamics in plants like corn, soybean, and grapevine to develop innovative management strategies.
- Education:
- PhD in Tropical Plant Pathology, University of Hawaii at Manoa (2021)
- MS in Tropical Plant Pathology, University of Hawaii at Manoa (2018)
- BS in Biotechnology, Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas ESPE (2016)
His research integrates virus-host-vector interactions, leveraging expertise gained during a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University and prior work on plant viruses in tropical and temperate crops. Affiliated with the Iowa Soybean Research Center and the Interdepartmental Microbiology program, he aims to dissect multi-trophic interactions for sustainable agricultural solutions.
