Alejandro Cardesín Moinelo works at the European Space Astronomy Centre in Madrid, Spain, where he serves as a manager in the Science Operations Department. He holds a PhD in Aerospace Science and Engineering and has been actively involved in several planetary missions including Mars Express, ExoMars, JUICE, Mars Express, and Venus Express.
- Current role: Science Operations Manager at European Space Astronomy Centre
- Key collaborations: Universidad del País Vasco, Instituto de Astrofísica e Ciências do Espaço, Space Science Institute, Institute for Space Aeronomy, Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique
His research interests span Solar System Exploration, Terrestrial Planets (Mars and Venus), Planetary Atmospheres, Remote Sensing, and Spectroscopy. He focuses on spacecraft geometry, science operations planning, and payload data processing for planetary missions.
His recent publications highlight trends in Martian atmospheric dynamics, Venusian cloud analysis, mission coordination, and planetary protection protocols. Notably, he has contributed to VIRTIS instrument calibration and global dust storm studies on Mars.
Cardesín Moinelo leads the Chair of the EuroPlanet Society Spain&Portugal Regional Hub and coordinates the Spanish Planetary Science & Solar System Exploration Community. His work supports international collaboration in planetary science and space exploration through coordinated observations and data sharing initiatives.
He has been instrumental in adapting aging spacecraft operations for continued science return, particularly during Mars Express' deep eclipse studies. His grants likely involve ESA-funded Mars wind and wave mapping and planetary protection research.
The Mars Express Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) has been repurposed under his guidance into a valuable science instrument for cloud analysis and atmospheric studies. His laboratory environment involves mission operations centers and multi-institutional research networks across Europe and international partners.
