Alda Balthrop-Lewis is an Associate Professor of Religion at Florida State University's College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University and has held previous appointments at Australian Catholic University and Brown University. Her research focuses on religious ethics, environmental justice, and asceticism, particularly examining the works of Henry David Thoreau and Thomas Merton. She serves as Associate Editor for Environmental Humanities and co-edits the Reflection and Theory in the Study of Religion book series.
Her education includes a Ph.D. in Religion, Ethics, and Politics from Princeton (2017), M.Div. from the University of Chicago (2011), and B.A. in Religious Studies from Stanford University (2006). She has received multiple awards including the 2024 AAR Individual Research Grant and 2023 Denis Edwards Fellowship.
Her current research project, Contemplation and Complicity, explores 20th-century Thoreauvians like Merton. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining religious studies with environmental humanities. Her writing spans academic journals and public platforms like ABC Religion and Ethics and The Conversation.
Prof. Balthrop-Lewis is active in professional service, including roles in editorial work, conference organizing, and academic advocacy. She has presented globally at institutions such as Harvard Divinity School, Oxford University, and the University of Sydney.
Her teaching spans topics from religion and ecology to ethics and race, with a commitment to mentoring graduate students. She has advised researchers on diverse topics including Bangladeshi migrant women's experiences and theological engagements with the Great Barrier Reef.
