Alberto G. Florez-Malagon is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of History at the University of Ottawa. He holds a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His career includes roles as Senior Program Officer at the International Development Research Center (IDRC), associate professorships at Javeriana and Los Andes Universities in Colombia, and directorships at COLCIENCIAS. His research focuses on Latin American history, particularly conflict dynamics, environmental history, cultural studies, and transdisciplinarity. Florez-Malagón has authored/edited numerous books and published widely on topics like rural studies, historiography, and cultural power dynamics.
Education: B.A. (Universidad de los Andes), M.A. and Ph.D. (State University of New York).
Research interests include global cultural politics, ideological construction, and Latin American identities. Notable awards include the Divisa de Honor Javeriana (2006) and the Florestán Fernández Award (2003).
He has served on editorial boards for journals like Anuario Colombiano de Historia Social and Memoria y Sociedad, and organized transdisciplinary academic workshops. His scholarly activities include jury roles for grants focusing on Central American violence and Andean development projects.
Labs/teams involvement includes collaborations with McGill University’s CDAS and the ECOS-NORD Program for Franco-Colombian scientific cooperation.
