Albert Bifet is a Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Director of the Te Ipu o te Mahara AI Institute at University of Waikato, while concurrently serving as Professor of Big Data at Télécom Paris, IP Paris. He co-chairs the NZ AI Researchers Association and leads major initiatives including the TAIAO Environmental Data Science project. His research team is Data, Intelligence and Graphs (DIG) at the Information Processing and Communication Laboratory (LTCI) within the Department of Computer Sciences and Networks.
His research focuses on:
- Machine learning from high-speed data streams
- Real-time analytics for evolving data sources
- Adaptive mining algorithms (MOA framework)
- Environmental data science applications
- Big data pattern recognition and online learning
He received the Best Paper Award at ACM FAccT 2023 for his contributions to fairness and transparency in AI systems.
As co-leader of the open-source MOA (Massive Online Analysis) project, he develops tools for implementing and experimenting with stream mining algorithms. He maintains collaborations across industry and academia, including previous positions at Huawei's Noah's Ark Lab and Yahoo Labs.
