Alba Hernandez Bonilla

Alba Hernandez Bonilla is a Professor in the Department of Genetics and Microbiology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). She leads research in nanotoxicology, focusing on the health impacts of micro- and nanoplastics, genotoxicity, and environmental contaminants. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean water and sustainable consumption.

Education: PhD in Genetics (UAB, 2008), Licenciatura in Biology (UAB, 2001).

Research Interests: Nanoplastic toxicity, long-term exposure effects, arsenic metabolism, intestinal barrier integrity, and innovative risk assessment tools. Her lab (Grup de Recerca de Mutagènesi) develops in vitro models to study health impacts of emerging contaminants.

Projects (Selected): Coordinator of PLASTICHEAL (2021–2025), an international initiative studying nanoplastics' health risks. Principal Investigator of DESARROLLO DE NAMS (2021–2024), focusing on contaminant analysis in wastewater.

Advising: Supervised 18 students, including predoctoral researchers like Juan Martín Pérez and Javier Gutiérrez-García. Active in mentoring interdisciplinary teams.

Labs/Teams: Leads the Mutagenesis Research Group and collaborates with institutions like CIBER-BBN and CIBERES in Spain. Her work spans toxicology, genetics, and environmental science.
