Alastair Thompson

Dr. Alastair Thompson is a Professor and Chief of the Section of Breast Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, where he holds the Olga Keith Wiess Chair of Surgery. He also serves as Co-Director of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center and Co-Associate Director for Clinical Research at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. His career spans 35 years as a clinician-scientist with a focus on breast cancer.

His research integrates translational studies and international clinical trials, targeting ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), nipple-sparing mastectomy, and sentinel lymph node biopsy. He has led pivotal trials like SOLE, MA32, and KRISTINE, and co-chaired the COMET Trial for low-risk DCIS.

Dr. Thompson is an editor of the Journal of Clinical Oncology and has supervised 26 postgraduate students. His scientific awards include the Lister Prize, Director's Service Award, and the 2025 DeBakey Excellence in Research Award. He actively contributes to ASCO, SSO, and AACR guidelines.
