Alastair Leyland is a Professor of Population Health Statistics and Associate Director of the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit at the University of Glasgow. He holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics, an M.Sc. in Applied Statistics from the University of Southampton, and a Ph.D. from the University of Sunderland. His work focuses on health inequalities, multilevel modeling, and the use of routinely collected health data.
He has led the Inequalities in Health research program since 1999 and co-leads it currently. His research interests include mortality inequalities in Scotland, evaluation of natural experiments, and expanding uses of linked health data. He co-authored a course book on multilevel modeling for public health and collaborated with global institutions like CIDACS (Brazil) and the Universidad Internacional del Ecuador on social policy and health inequalities.
Leyland chairs the European Public Health Association's Section Council and serves on multiple boards including the European Public Health Conference and NIHR funding panels. He has over 346 publications and has been a key figure in global health research, including studies on pandemic impacts, vaccination disparities, and socioeconomic determinants of health outcomes. His work emphasizes leveraging administrative data to address health inequities and inform policy.
He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health and the Royal Statistical Society, reflecting his contributions to statistical rigor and public health advocacy. His research spans from child health in care to the effects of welfare policies and trade unions on mental health during crises.
