Alastair Lewis is Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry at the University of York and Director of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS). He chairs the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Air Quality Expert Group and the Department for Transport Science Advisory Council.
His research addresses air pollution health impacts through: 1) Urban and indoor air quality assessment, 2) VOC emission speciation and trends, 3) Chemical metrology for trace gas detection, and 4) Policy-relevant evidence synthesis. Field campaigns span 30+ projects across polar, tropical and urban environments. Current priorities include hydrogen combustion emissions, pollution exposure disparities, and indoor-outdoor pollution linkages.
Awarded prizes include the Royal Society of Chemistry's John Jeyes Award (2012) and Lord Lewis Prize (2022). Research outputs demonstrate consistent focus on emission source characterization, regulatory impacts, and measurement innovation across atmospheric, domestic and industrial settings.
