معرفی
Dr Alan Young is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of Strathclyde, Faculty of Science. He is a key member of the SUPA (Scottish Universities Physics Alliance) and actively contributes to experimental plasma physics and high-power electromagnetic systems research. His work spans microwave-plasma interactions, pulse compression, and accelerator instrumentation, particularly within international collaborations such as the Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE).
His research focuses on plasma characterization, microwave amplification, and high-power RF systems. He investigates nonlinear wave-plasma interactions using helicon sources and magnetized plasmas, and contributes to the development of gyro-BWOs using helically corrugated waveguides. His expertise extends to diagnostic systems for particle beams and the generation of millimetre-wave super pulses using structured surfaces.
The recent publications demonstrate a strong trend in microwave engineering, plasma diagnostics, and pulse compression technologies, with applications in fusion, particle accelerators, and defense. His work frequently involves simulation, experimental validation, and international collaboration.

Dr Young has been involved in advising through his role as a Research Co-investigator on multiple large-scale projects, mentoring students and early-career researchers. He has secured significant grant funding from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and EPSRC, supporting long-term research in electromagnetic amplifiers and plasma systems. His work on the MICE project has contributed to advancing muon beam cooling techniques for future neutrino factories and muon colliders.
He is part of a vibrant research team in the Physics Department at Strathclyde, collaborating closely with Professors Kevin Ronald, Alan Phelps, and Colin Whyte. The group specializes in high-power microwave sources, plasma physics, and accelerator instrumentation, operating advanced experimental facilities for gyro-device development and plasma characterization.
