Professor Alan Walker is a microbiologist holding a Personal Chair at the Rowett Institute within the University of Aberdeen's School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. He serves as Postgraduate Research Coordinator for the Rowett Institute and is a member of the University of Aberdeen Foresterhill Biological Safety Committee.
Dr. Walker is a microbiologist by training with specific research interests in the bacteria that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract of mammalian hosts. His work combines anaerobic microbiology with DNA sequencing technologies to examine interactions between host diet and the intestinal microbiota of humans and animals, and how these factors may contribute to host health. His research spans gut microbiology, microbial genomics, host-microbe interactions, and the role of intestinal bacteria in dietary fiber breakdown.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on gut microbiome research, particularly examining microbial load, contamination control in low-biomass studies, and the structural biology of microbial enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism. His work shows increasing interest in the methodological rigor required for microbiome research and the importance of classical microbiology in this interdisciplinary field.
Scientific Awards:
- Clarivate (Web of Science) highly cited researcher (2019-2023)
- Outstanding Research Team award, Rowett Gut Microbiology Group, University of Aberdeen Excellence Awards (2023)
- Runner up, Nature/Yakult Global Grants for Gut Health Research Group Prize (2023)
Professor Walker is actively engaged in the microbiome research community through social media and professional networks, advocating for rigorous methodology and interdisciplinary collaboration in microbiome science. He is a prominent voice in discussions about contamination control in low-biomass studies and the importance of incorporating classical microbiology principles into microbiome research.
