Dr. Alan Sturrock is an Assistant Professor at George Mason University's College of Education and Human Development, specifically within the School of Education Division of Education Leadership and Policy. He holds an EdD from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. With a career spanning over two decades, he has taught in Scotland, Argentina, and the United States across public and private institutions. His professional roles include Graduate Teaching Assistant, Language Arts Supervisor, Director of English and Drama, Chair of Liberal Arts at the New England Conservatory of Music, and Elementary School Principal in Illinois, New York, and Maryland.
His research focuses on Servant Leadership, emphasizing ethical and community-oriented educational practices. He teaches courses such as Leading Schools and Communities, Curriculum Development and Evaluation, and Organizational Theory and Leadership. Sturrock advocates for pedagogies that prioritize student discovery and collaborative learning, as encapsulated in his teaching philosophy: 'good teaching is the process of assisting in the art of discovery.'
He joined George Mason in 2001 as an adjunct teacher and has since contributed to the department's mission through coursework and leadership. His academic affiliations include Thompson Hall 1300H on the Fairfax Campus.
