Dr. Alan Spencer is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Earth Science & Engineering at Imperial College London, where he serves as a Senior Strategic Teaching Fellow under the College’s Learning and Teaching Strategy. His role focuses on advancing innovative educational methods and aligning with Imperial’s vision to become a global leader in evidence-based education. He holds a PhD from Imperial College London (2016) and a BSc from the University of Birmingham (2006).
Dr. Spencer’s research centers on non-destructive methodologies, particularly synchrotron radiation and tomography, to study fossilized flora. His work explores evolutionary developments in plant biology, geochemical processes, and paleoecological reconstruction. Key areas include Mesozoic cycad evolution, Jurassic conifer cone morphology, and Carboniferous coal swamp ecosystems.
His publications span topics from fossilized fungal pathogens to virtual field methodologies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. Collaborations include work on the Purbeck Fossil Forest and the Rhynie Chert microfossils. His research bridges paleontology, geology, and computational techniques, contributing to our understanding of plant evolution and ancient environments.
