Alan R Bowers is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University's School of Engineering. His research focuses on environmental chemistry, modeling of water/wastewater treatment processes, and uncertainty analysis in biological/physical reactions. He leads a team investigating micropollutants like pharmaceuticals, struvite precipitation for phosphorus recovery, and novel technologies for treating fracking wastes.
- Education: Ph.D., M.C.E., and B.C.E. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Delaware
Research emphasizes fundamental environmental process evaluation using advanced instrumentation such as GC-MS, ICP, and ion chromatography. Current projects address emerging challenges in sustainable water management and resource recovery, including phosphorus recycling through struvite crystallization and biodegradation modeling for organic contaminants.
Laboratories are equipped to monitor radio-labeled tracers and measure pollutants, supporting studies on both conventional and emerging environmental contaminants. His work bridges basic science with engineering solutions for global resource management challenges.
