Alan Myers is a Professor at Iowa State University, specializing in plant biochemistry and starch metabolism. His research focuses on understanding starch assembly and disassembly mechanisms in higher plants, particularly maize. Collaborating with Martha James, he investigates starch biosynthesis's role in food production and renewable energy. Myers earned his B.S. in Biological Science from Carnegie Mellon University (1977), a Ph.D. in Genetics from Duke University (1983), and completed postdoctoral work at Columbia University (1983–1986).
His research integrates molecular genetics, biochemistry, and genomics to explore starch metabolism pathways in plants. Key areas include enzyme function in starch synthesis, metabolic regulation in maize endosperm, and genetic engineering to enhance crop resilience. Recent work addresses heat stress adaptation in maize through enzyme engineering and metabolic pathway optimization.
Myers has contributed to over 50 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on starch synthases, debranching enzymes, and metabolic networks in plants. His lab's findings have implications for improving crop yields and developing sustainable agricultural practices. He maintains active collaborations in plant genomics and functional studies, with a strong emphasis on translating basic research into practical applications for agriculture.
