Dr Alan Maddox is a Senior Lecturer in Musicology at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. He serves as Program Leader for the Bachelor of Music (Musicology Major) and Master of Music (Musicology) programs. His research focuses on European music history before 1800, particularly the influence of classical rhetoric on vocal performance, and music in Australian colonial society (1788–1900). Maddox is a member of the Vere Gordon Childe Centre and has held roles with the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions (CHE), including Node Leader at the University of Sydney. He has performed with Opera Australia and is a respected music writer, contributing to journals like Early Music and giving pre-concert talks for the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra.
Education: BA and PhD from the University of Sydney.
Research Interests: His work bridges historical musicology and performance practice, emphasizing rhetoric's role in Baroque vocal music and the sociocultural dimensions of music in colonial Australia. Recent projects include studies on music and prison reform in Norfolk Island and a forthcoming book on Italian recitative performance.
Grants & Collaborations: Awarded the 2020 Partnership Collaboration Award with Jen-yen Chen (National Taiwan University). Active in international research networks like Grasping Kairos and the Sydney Intellectual History Network.
