Alan Logan is an Assistant Professor in Sustainable Logistics at Heriot-Watt University, affiliated with the Edinburgh Business School and the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight. He holds a Research Fellow position in the School of Social Sciences. His research focuses on applying data-driven approaches to decarbonize transport systems, particularly the haulage sector. Previously, he specialized in geometric group theory, with notable contributions to algebraic structures and group automorphisms.
Education: PhD in Mathematics (University of Glasgow, 2016), MMath (University of St Andrews, 2009). Professional roles include postdoctoral research at Heriot-Watt (2018–2022) and teaching positions at multiple institutions.
Research interests span sustainable logistics, decarbonization strategies, and pure mathematics topics like free groups, automorphism groups, and residual finiteness. Awards include the William Jack Prize (2016) for outstanding PhD work in mathematics.
Publications highlight contributions to both applied and theoretical domains, including government reports on zero-emission infrastructure and peer-reviewed journal articles in mathematics. Teaching experience includes coordinating courses in data science, statistics, and pure mathematics.
