Alan Jones is a Senior Lecturer in Photography at Manchester Metropolitan University's School of Art. His academic position places him within the Photography department where he engages in experimental photographic practices and teaching.
Dr. Jones's research focuses on time and memory with the analogue process using silver and non-silver process. He is deeply engaged in Exploring the Anthropocene and the Hyper Object. His work challenges conventional photographic boundaries through what he describes as making photography move within itself, or a instability within its own space and time, therefore denying photography the image its fundamental stability, perhaps a lost and an ambiguous timeline. He explicitly states having no interest in its physically or presence in a reality that is known to us, indicating a radical approach to photographic theory and practice.
His recent artistic output demonstrates consistent exploration of temporal instability and material processes. The 2016 work 'Flight' continues his investigation into movement within photographic media, while his earlier exhibitions 'not just another f******* story' (2006) and 'sex death and flat pack furniture' (2005) showcase his long-standing interest in conceptual approaches to photography, often combining wet process silver prints with video elements and experimental techniques.
Based in office LW.3.17 at the Lowry building, Jones maintains active engagement with both theoretical and practical aspects of contemporary photography through his teaching and artistic practice.
