Professor Alan Fairlamb is a leading academic in Biological Chemistry and Drug Discovery at the University of Dundee, with a career spanning major institutions including University of Edinburgh, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and Rockefeller University. His research focuses on kinetoplastid parasites causing African trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and Chagas disease, integrating biochemistry, drug discovery, and molecular parasitology.
- Educated at University of Edinburgh (PhD in Biochemistry, 1975)
- Key roles: Head, Division of Biological Chemistry & Drug Discovery (1996-2102); Co-Director, Drug Discovery Unit (2006-)
His research explores parasite metabolism, drug resistance mechanisms, and novel therapeutic targets like trypanothione reductase and CYP51. Recent publications highlight advances in PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases and Nature, focusing on pterin metabolism, proteasome inhibition, and nitro-drug activation.
Scientific accolades include Commander of the British Empire, 3Rs Prize, and multiple fellowships (Royal Society of Edinburgh, Academy of Medical Sciences). He leads collaborative projects on antimicrobial development, with emphasis on UN Sustainable Development Goals for global health equity.
