Alan Cooper serves as the Elaine Ravich Professor of Jewish Studies and provost at The Jewish Theological Seminary. He holds an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in Religion from Yale University along with a B.A. in religion from Columbia University.
His research centers on Jewish Studies with particular focus on Biblical Interpretation, Psalms, Torah, and Leviticus. Cooper's scholarly work examines how traditional Jewish interpretation engages with biblical texts across historical periods, with special attention to liturgical contexts and interpretive traditions.
His publications demonstrate consistent engagement with how Jewish communities have understood biblical texts throughout history. His work on Psalm 47 reveals how shofar imagery relates to post-exilic hopes rather than Rosh Hashana observance, while his analysis of Deuteronomy's purity laws shows the diversity of interpretation across Qumranite, Karaite, and Rabbinic traditions.
As provost, Cooper holds significant administrative responsibility at this prominent institution of Jewish learning, bridging academic scholarship with traditional religious study.
