Dr Alan Cholodenko is an Honorary Fellow and Honorary Associate at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Discipline of Film Studies. He holds degrees including BA (Princeton), JD AM PhD (Harvard). A pioneering figure in Film Studies and animation theory since 1978, he developed the University’s Film Studies program and authored influential works like The Illusion of Life: Essays on Animation. His research bridges film theory, animation studies, and contemporary French thought, with notable contributions to understanding animation’s philosophical and cultural dimensions.

Research focuses on the interplay between animation theory, film theory, and French poststructuralist ideas. Key interests include the lifedeath continuum in animation, Baudrillardian hyperreality, and the animation of art objects.
