Alan Budenz

Dr. Alan Budenz is a Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, University of the Pacific. He also serves as President of the Dugoni School of Dentistry Alumni Association, marking his second term leading an alumni association after previously leading the UCSF School of Dentistry Alumni Association (1998-99). Known for his mentorship, Budenz has taught full-time for 27 years, emphasizing hands-on learning and student well-being.

Education: B.S. in Comparative Anatomy/Zoology from UCLA, DDS from UCSF School of Dentistry (1982). Early career included private practice and teaching at UCSF before joining Pacific. He pioneered the CARE Clinic (1993) for HIV/AIDS patient care, leading to interdisciplinary expertise. Organized over 10 student service trips to Jamaica and the Philippines, blending clinical training with community service.

Research & Mentorship: Focuses on diagnostic sciences and medical education, integrating clinical skills with patient psychology. Founded the Ultrasonics Swim Team (1996) to promote student fitness and camaraderie, and initiated stress-relief programs like Lake Tahoe boat trips. Recognized for educational content creation, lectures, and volunteerism, with 11 total years of alumni board service.

Personal Interests: Enjoys global lecturing, extreme sports (surfing, skiing, swimming in SF Bay daily), and ceramics—a lifelong hobby since college.
