Alan Bristow is a Professor and Associate Chair of Graduate Studies and Research in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at West Virginia University (WVU). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield (2004) and has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Toronto and JILA. His research focuses on ultrafast nanophotonics, particularly light-matter interactions in condensed matter systems, with applications in photonics, electronics, and energy harvesting. He leads the Ultrafast Nanophotonics Group, which uses ultrafast laser techniques to study carrier dynamics, coherent phenomena, and nonlinear optics in materials like quantum wells, nonlinear crystals, and nanocatalysts.
Prof. Bristow has been affiliated with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) since 2017 and is an Associate Editor for Optical Materials Express. His work is funded by the NSF, NIST, and NASA. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in physics, including optics, solid-state physics, and laboratory research methods. His research group collaborates internationally and has contributed to advancements in plasmonic energy transfer, hot-carrier solar cells, and dielectric photocatalysis. Prof. Bristow also engages in climate policy advocacy through the ECAS Climate Group.
