Alan Battersby (deceased February 10, 2018) was Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Cambridge from 1988 to 1992. He was elected to the Academy of Europe in 1989 as an Ordinary Member in the Chemical Sciences section and resided in the United Kingdom throughout his career.
His research pioneered the understanding of organic biosynthesis mechanisms, with seminal work on the genetic blueprint, structure, and synthetic pathway of Cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12). This established foundational knowledge in natural product chemistry and enzymatic synthesis.
Professor Battersby received numerous prestigious scientific honors recognizing his contributions including:
- Copley Medal (2000) - Royal Society's highest award
- Tetrahedron Prize (1995) for creativity in organic chemistry
- Royal Medal (1984) for outstanding biological research
- Davy Medal (1977) for chemical discoveries
- Paul Karrer Gold Medal (1977) for biochemical achievements
- Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University (1987)
