Alain Takam

Alain Takam is an Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at the University of Lethbridge. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in French Studies (Linguistics) from Dalhousie University, complemented by graduate degrees (D.E.A., M.A., M.A./M.Ed.) and a B.A. from the University of Yaoundé I in Cameroon. Prior to joining the University of Lethbridge, he taught French and linguistics at multiple Canadian institutions, including Dalhousie University, Mount Saint Vincent University, and the University of Waterloo.

Takam's research explores applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, with emphasis on:

• Minority language revitalization through education and media
• Language policy and planning in bilingual contexts (Cameroon and Canada)
• Endangered languages, contact linguistics, and socio-pragmatics
• Cameroon English and the sociolinguistics of translation

His publications frequently analyze French and English bilingual education systems, language attitudes in technical curricula, and post-colonial language policies.

His recent articles (2020–2022) predominantly investigate language education in Ontario and Cameroon, focusing on policy implementation, student engagement in technical programs, and revitalization strategies for minority languages. Earlier works (2013–2019) delve into structural aspects of Cameroon English, media-driven language promotion, and comparative analyses of Canadian/Cameroonian bilingual policies.

Takam received the Killam Scholarship during his doctoral studies at Dalhousie University, recognizing his contributions to linguistics.
