Dr. Alain Lawo-Sukam is an Associate Professor of Hispanic and Africana Studies and Coordinator of the Africana Studies Program at Texas A&M University. He holds a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on Afro-Hispanic literature and culture, with specialties in African literature written in Spanish, colonial and postcolonial contexts, and cultural identity. He has authored monographs such as La literatura africana en castellano (2023) and creative works like Mange-Mil y sus historias de tierra caliente (2017).
His academic contributions span numerous peer-reviewed articles and editorial roles. He has received prestigious awards including the College of Liberal Arts’ ACI Award and the AFS Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching. Dr. Lawo-Sukam has also served on the Modern Language Association’s Executive Committee, contributing to the African Division’s leadership.
Key research themes include transnationalism in Afro-Colombian poetry, soccer’s role in Cameroon’s political discourse, and the intersection of black identity with socio-national narratives in literature. His work bridges colonial histories, modern cultural expressions, and interdisciplinary approaches to postcolonial studies.
