Aklilu Amanuel Tecleab is a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Hamburg and an alumnus of the institution. He is affiliated with the Center for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC) and focuses on digitizing, cataloging, and documenting Eritrean manuscript libraries. His work addresses challenges in preserving Eritrean cultural heritage due to political, economic, and environmental factors, emphasizing the importance of digitization and collaboration with international institutions like the British Library and Hill Museum & Manuscript Library.
His research centers on Eritrean Christian-era manuscripts written in Gǝʿǝz, Tigrinya, Amharic, and Arabic, stored in remote monasteries, churches, and private collections. These manuscripts contain secular knowledge on history, philosophy, law, astronomy, and medicine, but many remain unstudied and at risk of loss. Tecleab’s project aims to conduct the first comprehensive survey of Eritrean manuscript collections, ensuring their accessibility for future scholarship.
