Akiko Iwasaki is the Sterling Professor of Immunobiology and Professor of Dermatology, Molecular Cellular and Developmental Biology, and Epidemiology (Microbial Diseases) at Yale University. She is an Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and leads the Iwasaki Lab at Yale School of Medicine.
- Education: PhD from University of Toronto (1998), Postdoctoral training at National Institutes of Health
- Research Focus: Immune defense against mucosal viruses, long COVID pathobiology, mucosal vaccines, and virus-autoimmunity-cancer links
Her peer-reviewed studies (2024-2025) explore:
- Neuroimmune mechanisms in long COVID
- Stromal niche dynamics in autoimmune diseases
- CSF immunotyping for chronic fatigue syndrome
- Mucosal vaccine strategies against SARS-CoV-2
- Antiviral trials for long COVID (PAX-LC)
Scientific Recognition:
- Forbes 50 Over 50 Innovation List (2024)
- Nakaaki Tsukahara Memorial Award (2024)
- National Academy of Sciences (2018) and National Academy of Medicine (2019)
- European Molecular Biology Organization (2021)
The Iwasaki Lab develops animal models for long COVID, investigates innate-adaptive immunity crosstalk at mucosal surfaces, and designs vaccines to prevent viral transmission. She also leads the Yale Co-Authors network with collaborators like Albert Ko and Nathan Grubaugh.
