Professor Aileen Fyfe is a leading scholar in the history of science and technology at the University of St Andrews, where she holds the Chair of Modern History within the School of History. She also serves as Associate Director of the Institute of Intellectual History. Her research focuses on the communication of science, scholarly publishing, and the intersection of technology with knowledge dissemination. She earned her MA, MPhil, and PhD in History & Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge.
Her notable work includes the book A History of Scientific Journals (2022), which examines the Royal Society’s publishing history, and a Leverhulme-funded project on Victorian information and publishing. She has held prestigious fellowships, including membership in the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Royal Historical Society.
Her research interests span academic publishing economics, peer review history, and the legacies of empire in academia. She co-directs projects on women’s experiences in St Andrews’ History departments and the university’s colonial ties. Recent work includes analyzing the Royal Society’s financial and editorial practices over centuries.
