Aicha Kriaa is a Postdoctoral Fellow (Research Fellow) at Umeå University's Department of Molecular Biology, working in Björn Schröder's and Ulrika Westerlind's research groups under the Excellence by Choice program. Her work centers on understanding mucus dysfunction in intestinal inflammation and bacterial degradation of the mucosal barrier.
She earned her PhD in Biology through a joint program between Tunisia's University of Sfax and France's University of Paris-Saclay, where she investigated gut microbiome proteases and their role in intestinal homeostasis. Her doctoral research identified key proteolytic microbes and characterized species-specific patterns in healthy versus IBS patients.
Her expertise spans Gut Microbiome analysis, Mucosal Immunology, and Microbial Protease biochemistry, with direct relevance to inflammatory bowel conditions. Current projects focus on how gut bacteria compromise the protective mucus layer defective in IBS/IBD.
Prior to her postdoc, she managed European Coordination Support Actions Human Microbiome Action and Microbiome Support, gaining broad experience in microbiome research coordination across diverse scientific domains.
She operates within Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR), specifically in Björn Schröder's lab at the Hospital Area location, studying host-microbe interactions in the gut environment.
